Bring Your Own Control with the Q-SYS Ecosystem 4m 32s
00:07
As we consider a post-COVID world,
00:10
we want to make sure that our meeting room participants are as safe as possible.
00:13
That could mean minimizing physical interaction with room control.
00:17
Today I’m going to show you how to let users control their Q-SYS meeting rooms
00:22
from their smartphone devices rather than relying solely on a touchscreen controller . . . using QR Codes.
00:30
That’s right, I said “QR codes”.
00:33
I’ll be the first to admit, that when QR codes first came out, I laughed at these things. Like, a lot.
00:39
Like, they were gimmicky and they were hard to use. But believe it or not, these little guys have come a long way,
00:45
and most smart phones nowadays natively recognize QR codes in the camera app,
00:50
and give you the ability to launch a web URL or a link to launch a specific app.
00:55
Well, that’s exactly what we’re gonna do with Q-SYS UCI.
00:58
To get started, your Q-SYS Core processor needs to be connected to the same Wifi network
01:03
used by your meeting room participants.
01:06
If your Core is using a dedicated AV network that’s not a part of the larger corporate wi-fi network,
01:11
you could always use one of the available unused LAN ports on your Core to make this connection.
01:17
An easy way to test this out would be to connect your phone or laptop to that same Wifi network and then
01:23
attempt to open Core Manager from a browser using your Core’s IP address.
01:28
While you’re in Core Manager, you can grab the link to the desired UCI.
01:32
Click on the User Control Interface tab, select the appropriate UCI and then click Open in the upper right corner.
01:41
You’ll see a pop-up window containing the link we’ll use for the QR Code.
01:45
Next, it’s time to generate your QR code and make it available to your users.
01:49
You can use any number of FREE QR generators available online, so take your pick.
01:55
Enter your URL to generate the QR Code, and then output that code as a high resolution jpg or PNG.
02:03
Alternatively, you could use the QR Code Generator plugin which you can find in Q-SYS Designer Asset Manager.
02:11
After installing it, drag that component into your Schematic, and then open it.
02:16
Once you've saved to the Core and run, select the network interface and the UCI device type,
02:24
and then, the plugin will automatically generate a custom QR Code, which you can place into your UCI.
02:30
Keep in mind that this plugin does require a scripting engine to deploy and an active connection to the internet
02:37
to generate the code, so clearly this plugin doesn’t work for every system.
02:41
But if you already have the Scripting license deployed in your system. It’s a nice shortcut to creating that QR code.
02:48
In either scenario, you can then go to UCI Editor and drag your QR graphic onto the UCI.
02:55
Just make sure you place it somewhere where it's easily accessible from any page, like on your main navigation.
03:02
Then, all your users need to do is open their camera app on their smart phone, aim it at that code,
03:08
and in a matter of seconds, they'll have control of that room on their phones!
03:13
If you want to take extra precaution, replace your standard controls on your TSC with a single screen
03:19
containing NO other controls other than that QR Code link,
03:23
funneling all users to your custom smartphone’s friendly UCI control.
03:28
You could even wire a simple motion sensor to trigger Q-SYS to automatically wake up the TSC
03:34
when users enter the room!
03:36
Pretty cool, right? Well let’s take that a few steps farther shall we?
03:39
Maybe you want to display social distancing instructions directly
03:43
on the room’s display before each meeting.
03:46
Well if those installations are using NV Series video endpoints, you could totally do that!
03:51
You can start by making a custom signage graphic available to your NV Series devices using Core Manager.
03:57
These background graphics are shared assets for all NV devices on the same system.
04:03
Then, you can enabled the Dynamic Idle Screen feature,
04:07
allowing you customize the message for each endpoint and room it services.
04:12
You could direct your attendees to use the QR Code on the touch screen,
04:16
or maybe even provide a Bitly version of your UCI that they can use on their mobile browser.
04:21
And, that’s it for Bring your Own Control with Q-SYS. Stay safe everyone, and we’ll see you next time.
